Dental Crowns & Bridges

Dental Crowns & Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are two of the most widely used dental restorations. They are typically made from tooth-colored materials so that they can act as both restorative and cosmetic dental appliances.

What Is A Dental Crown?

A crown is a restoration that covers or caps a tooth and is used to restore tooth function and improve appearance. It covers the entire visible part of the tooth above the gum line, restoring it to its original shape and size after damage such as chipping has occurred. If you have a cracked, broken, worn down, decayed, or otherwise damaged tooth, our dentist may recommend a crown.

Dental crowns can be used to correct a variety of issues that are negatively affecting your smile. They are often made from porcelain or ceramic with an underlying metal structure for support.

What Is a Bridge?

A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by “bridging” the space between two teeth with artificial replacements. The bridge generally consists of two crowns, which are placed over the natural teeth on either side of the gap, and a false tooth or teeth in between. The false teeth are called pontics. These replacement teeth can be made from a variety of materials.

Porcelain bonded to metal is the most common choice because porcelain is strong, durable, and looks the most realistic. The bridge is usually bonded to the teeth on either side of the gap. However, sometimes, implants are used to anchor the bridge in place instead of natural teeth.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Crowns & Bridges?

The most significant benefit of dental crowns and bridges is their ability to restore the function and appearance of teeth affected by damage or decay. When patients are missing one or more permanent teeth, a bridge or a partial denture is used to fill the empty space and restore chewing function. If a tooth has deteriorated as a result of cavities or traumatic injury, a crown can be used to restore normal function and protect the tooth from further damage.

Both crowns and bridges are made to match the color and appearance of your natural teeth, so no one will be able to tell that you have had restorative work done.

In addition to restoring function, these restorations are also extremely aesthetically pleasing. Missing teeth are not only detrimental to a patient’s dental health, but they can also cause a person to feel self-conscious about their smile. With a full mouth of natural-looking, healthy teeth, you will be able to flash a brilliant smile and speak and chew with comfort and confidence.
