Dental implants are permanent solutions for fully replacing missing teeth, including their roots. These artificial tooth roots made from titanium are surgically placed into the jaw and act as anchors for tooth replacements like crowns, bridges, or dentures. The look and function of dental implants are very different from traditional false teeth like partials or full dentures. While traditional dentures may slip and move in the mouth, dental implants stay in place permanently and only require regular brushing and flossing to stay clean and healthy.
Dental implants are great for patients who are missing one, several, or all of their teeth. Patients who suffer from gum disease or advanced tooth decay may not be eligible for dental implant procedures.
Why Are Dental Implants Beneficial Over Alternatives?
Dental implants are beneficial to your oral health because they replace both your natural tooth and the tooth’s root, unlike bridges and dentures, which only replace the visible portion of the missing tooth. The implants fuse with your jawbone and help preserve it.
If you do not replace missing teeth, your remaining teeth may shift over time. In addition, your jaw may also weaken due to missing teeth, and the jaw bone will begin to deteriorate, causing your face to look sunken or hollow. All of these issues can be avoided with a simple implant procedure.
How Are Dental Implants Placed?
An implant is a titanium metal post surgically positioned into the patient's jawbone to replace one or more missing teeth. Dental implants require a minor oral surgery procedure. The implant is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth. At Gregg L. Lage, D.D.S., P.C., we do not place dental implants but refer our patients out for implant placement. Once the jawbone fuses with the implant and the area are healed, we attach a replacement tooth on the top of the implant.
