Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures. It is a great way to enhance the brightness and whiteness of your teeth. There are two main types of professional teeth whitening – take-home whitening trays and in-office whitening.

For at-home whitening, an impression of the teeth is taken to make a specialized whitening tray that will hold the bleach against the teeth. In-office whitening uses a light or heat source to enhance the bleaching process. It is typically done in two to four 15-minute sessions, although a longer period may be needed for severely stained teeth.

Professional teeth whitening is considered the most effective and safest method for achieving a brighter smile. But, results are not permanent. You will need to touch up your smile with an at-home whitening system to maintain your new brighter shade.

At-Home Teeth Whitening

Patients who wish to get their teeth whitened in the comfort of their homes can choose take-home whitening kits from our dental office. We will custom-fabricate whitening trays for you and provide them along with a whitening gel. The trays have to be worn for a period of time, generally from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening.

Teeth Whitening Procedure

Your dentist will first examine your teeth and gums to make sure there are no underlying issues that will interfere with your results. The dentist will then take impressions of your teeth to create a mold that holds your custom-fit whitening trays. Once your trays are made, you will return to the dentist’s office to have your molds fitted to ensure a precise and comfortable fit. You will be given bleach gel to place into the custom-fitted trays yourself at home. You will fill the trays with the gel and then wear them for the recommended amount of time each day. It usually takes between two to four weeks to achieve your desired results. However, there are some cases where patients see results in as little as a week. You should also avoid drinking darkly colored liquids, including soda, coffee, tea, red wine, and dark fruit juices, while you whiten your teeth. These beverages can stain your newly whitened teeth. It is important to continue regular checkups with your dentist to ensure the health and appearance of your teeth.
